THE SCIENCE

The science behind changing how alcohol feels in your brain

When you drink alcohol your brain releases endorphins that activate opioid receptors. This creates a rewarding effect which over time conditions the brain to associate alcohol with pleasure. The more this pathway is reinforced, the stronger your urges become and the harder it is to cut back.

The Sinclair Method uses a targeted, clinician-led protocol taken before drinking to reduce the reward signal from alcohol. Because the brain no longer receives the same reinforcement, the learned behaviour can gradually weaken.

  • The cue = drinking alcohol
  • The reduced reward = less reinforcement
  • The changing response = less pull to keep going


Over time this is often described as extinction learning. In plain English, your brain unlearns the strong drinking pathway it built over years.
